Technical Translation Between Specifications, Development, and the Customer

A supplier was working with complex OEM specifications and multiple external partners. While the requirements were formally known, misunderstandings regarding technical interpretation and evaluation occurred repeatedly.

Dr. Eberhard Pantow im Gespräch mit einem Unternehmer am Whiteboard

Problem Statement

Key technical points were lost in coordination processes, and while the supporting documentation was formally complete, it did not provide a clear basis for decision-making. Key technical points were lost in coordination processes, and while the supporting documentation was formally complete, it did not provide a clear basis for decision-making.

My Solution

I took on the role of technical translator between the specification, development, and the customer. This involved the structured interpretation of requirements, the derivation of clear technical targets, and the preparation of decision-relevant arguments and documentation.

Result

Communication among all stakeholders became significantly clearer and more efficient. Technical decisions could be made on a sound basis and defended in a transparent manner, which reduced development time and coordination efforts.

Developing a New Heat Exchanger Without In-House Product Experience

A supplier wanted to expand its product portfolio with a new heat exchanger. While comparable products were known, the company had no in-house experience with design, failure modes, or OEM validation.

Kühler mit OEM Validierung

Problem Statement

There was a risk of uncritically adopting existing design solutions without understanding the actual operational loads, robustness requirements, and critical vulnerabilities. In particular, it was unclear which load cases would be decisive in real-world operation and how simulation, testing, and subsequent validation needed to be effectively coordinated.

My Solution

I conducted a structured benchmark of existing market products, including detailed analyses of construction methods and relevant design features. Building on this, I derived realistic load profiles for vehicle use and assisted in establishing suitable CAE methods. Additionally, I defined a targeted validation concept and supported the evaluation of test results.

Result

The customer gained a solid understanding of the product-specific risks and robustness requirements at an early stage. Development and validation resources were deployed strategically, unnecessary iterations were avoided, and the ability to make technical decisions was significantly improved.

Validation Failure Despite Successful Design Approval

A previously developed heat exchanger had successfully passed internal calculations and validation tests, but unexpectedly failed an OEM test. The failure occurred under operating conditions that were previously considered to be covered.

Problem Statement

There was a discrepancy between the specifications, the CAE results, and the actual load conditions. Neither the design nor the methodology provided a clear explanation for the failure mode. There was a risk of making purely symptomatic corrections without understanding the root cause.

My Solution

I systematically analyzed the relevant load cases, boundary conditions, and mission profiles and compared them with the previous assumptions from calculations and validation. Based on this, the actual failure mode was identified. Building on this, I developed concrete recommendations for adapting the design, the CAE methodology, and the validation strategy—structured according to an 8D framework.

Result

The cause of the failure was clearly identified and addressed in a sustainable manner. The measures taken not only improved the specific product but also enhanced the reliability of future calculations and tests.

Technological and Strategic Assessment in the Context of Electrification

A company wanted to understand how technological and regulatory changes—particularly in the context of electrification—would impact its existing product portfolio.

Problem Statement

There was a lack of a solid foundation for assessing the opportunities and risks of new technologies and deriving concrete recommendations for future product decisions.

My Solution

I analyzed relevant technological and regulatory trends, evaluated published solutions from OEMs and competitors, and conducted a technically sound patent analysis. The results were presented in a structured format and translated into concrete courses of action.

Result

The client received a clear, technically sound basis for decision-making regarding the further development of its portfolio. Investment and development decisions could be made in a targeted and risk-aware manner.
